So my suspiciously cheap E46 revealed its master plan today... In a cloud of blue smoke.

I see my options as

-Resell the car (NADA lists the retail value at 8400 in good condition, 4125 in rough trade in. I recon post at 4 grand and take anything over the 2200 i have invested in it so far)

-Replace the engine with another M54B25

-Replace the engine with a M54B30 (unless I'm gonna run into computer issues)

-Rebuild the engine, if it is the cheaper route, and if the block is good.

-Rebuild the engine with better parts, if the block is still good.

Or finally

-Admit defeat and that I am rubbish at having cars and drown myself in a bathtub of my own tears.

Any suggestions or ideass appreciated.

Rebuild it: stronger and faster than before...provided you have the time and desire.

New M54 is en route. Once I have the old engine harvested, I'll tear it down and see what killed it. So far I know it wasn't a camshaft or timing chain, or anything on the top end.

Now since I will have a new used engine, I will be changing out all hard to reach maintenance items. The guys on Bimmerforums have a pretty good list so I should be OK there unnless someone has anything to add. The question I have is does anyone (looking at you, Brody and John) have a clutch recommendation? I might as well change that while I'm changing everything else.

Not that I have a whole ton of miles on it, but that Gripforce kit I picked up from ebay has been great so far, and I haven't exactly been gentle with it post-break-in.

Looks like they have more of a real site now, too:

Really depends on power goals. What I'll put in the S4 with new turbos (eventually) will probably be a FX400 at the low end. You, thankfully, should have no need to go there.

The E30 clutch isn't at all bad to drive. There isn't much of a slip window, it's really not bad. As Mark said the verdict is still out on longevity. I would seriously consider one in my E36 if I needed one.

Yeah, it'll be all about how long it lasts...dirt freaking cheap, in any event.

They have a few options (six-puck copper!) that would fit the M5...if the one in the E30 lasts, I'll be mighty tempted to go with them for the E39*.

*Unless I have somehow acquired fabulous wealth by the time I need one. Then UUC has a multidisc option for $Texas that I might consider.

Sounds good. I'm looking on that site, but I need to contact them because they state the one they have for the e46 is for the 6 speed. I'm assuming it's a typo or they didn't include the 5 speed, but you know what happens when you assume.

As far as power outputs, if I were going for power I would just do a S52/54 swap. I just want a nice runabout.

If that's the goal, stock might be just fine too. They don't go for much either.

So today began the teardown/harvesting. At least I can say I definitively know the engine is dead. After I got the air box out of the bay, I found a destroyed connecting rod sticking out of a hole in the top of the block, crank side up. Looks like I get a new coffee table.
