1127. A warm wind blows across the plain of fast troubles, racing through the grass to the city of Otosan Uchi. Rising to meet it is the sound of hammers and the calls of workmen as the great city is rebuilt, board by board, to its former glory.

The reign of Emperor Kyoshi the First, named the "Splendid Emperor" by many, appears to be a much-welcomed respite from the constant warfare of the years since the beginning of the Scorpion Coup. The city has suffered much, but it is the duty of a samurai to pay such prices gladly and without hesitation. Even the most battle-hardened samurai seem ready to set aside their personal feuds for the sake of rebuilding the Empire, at least for a time. The wounds begin to heal.

The Emerald Throne, destroyed in the thunder's combat with Fu Leng, has been replaced with one crafted entirely of Jade, a gift from the Crab Clan. With Fu Leng slain, Togashi's death, and the destiny of the seven thunders fulfilled Kyoshi declares a new age begun, an Age of Man, the age of the Jade Empire.

After Hida Dokun term as pro-tem Emerald Champion, Kyoshi followed tradition and called an Emerald championship in accordance with tradition which pleased and placated many who had felt uncomfortable with the position being appointed. Dokun, against all expectations, made it to the final round in which some say he lost intentionally to Kakita Toshimoko, the Gray Crane, because he felt that Toshimoko would be a better dualist for the Emperor while his place was to protect the Emperor on the Wall.

As a reward for their service to Toturi and steadfast opposition of the true threat to the empire, many Ronin in Toturi's service are offered positions in the Imperial Guard in his memory, that they may continue to serve Kyoshi in the memory of their fallen master with Takuan as their master in the field. Not long after Kyoshi's Coronation and this pronouncement, Toku, Toturi's right hand, comes forward and confesses that he was not truly a samurai, but merely a heiman who had found an abandoned daisho. He requests that Kyoshi allow him one final true act as samurai - seppuku. Kyoshi denies this request, having known Toku since his gempukku, and claims that Toku was a truer samurai then most born to the name. He names Toku the captain of the Imperial Guard and names a new Minor Clan, the Monkey, with Toku as its daimyo. They are not granted any Imperial lands, but make their home in the rebuilding Otosan Uchi.

The Scorpion, currently led by Bayushi Kumo after the death of Bayushi Kaichiko on the Day of Thunder, are officially reinstated as a Great Clan after the Emperor publicly declares that what the Scorpion did was meant for the ultimate good of the Empire. Although this wins Kyoshi few friends in court, it does earn him the unwavering loyalty of the Scorpion. As the scorpion slowly come out of hiding and reform their ravaged clan and rebuild the ruins of Kyuden Bayushi, Shosuro Nanashi is dispatched with a team of Shinobi to investigate what has become of Mirumoto Kaze after the day of thunder. He and his men are skilled but the new Dragon Daimyo stymies them at ever turn. Always during there infiltration attempts they happen across small groups of Togashi tattooed monks, some giving their family name as Kaze in honor of their new Champion, politely but firmly turning them away, even in the most unlikely of places and guises. The Dragon Champion is always one step ahead.

The Clan War have caused many to look on the Crab with fear and distrust, but the support of Emperor Kyoshi and Hida Dokun's efforts have done much to win back the Crabs honor. The Kaiu wall is being repaired to once again stand as a symbol of defiance against the Shadowlands. The Shadowlands is as quiet as it has ever been with the death of it's Lord and while the Crab still must be vigilant, it is a welcome rest for them as well. Additionally the Crab and their Naga allies are planning a massive assault against the Shadowlands to take advantage of this lull with the goal of finally retaking the ancestral Hiruma lands.

The Lion have reached a crisis of faith. During the events of the Clan War that divided them between loyalty to the Hantei line and loyalty to the Emperor, the Lion sided with Toturi. Now, with Toturi and the Hantei Dynasty dead and a dishonored member of their clan on the throne, many Lion are torn. The fact that Kyoshi hosted the soul of the First Matsu to slay Fu Leng redeems him in the eyes of most lion, but a handful request the right to seppuku to express their distaste with this new dynasty. Of course this opposition is not as strong as it could have been, many of those most loyal to the Hantei line were on the wrong side of the day of thunder. Ujiaki himself (leader of the Loyalists) fought against Toturi even as Fu Leng's troops tore them apart. The man who has come to the forefront of the Lion and taken up the mantle of champion is a former student of Toturi's, Ikoma Tsanuri. She recognizes that the Empire is in capable hands and is doing her best to stamp out any resentment toward the Emperor with her simple reasoning and boundless patience.

Catapulted to Great Clan status by the Emperor's Edict and Yoritomo's brash demand, the Mantis is attempting to earn the respect of the other great clans. Though appreciative of his efforts in the Clan War, many clans are reticent to award the mantis the privileges as a Great Clan. To make matters worse, many members of the Mantis alliance begin returning home without the imminent threat of war. Disgusted by this Tsuruchi, daimyo of the Wasp Clan, swears fealty to the Mantis although he retains his family name. Yoritomo is greatly impressed.

The Phoenix are in near total ruin. Most of the most prominent shugenja are dead including the entire Elemental Council. Although Shiba Tsukune possesses the same soul that has guided her ancestors, she is not a courtier and has difficult making the needs of her clan heard. The Phoenix may not remain a Great Clan for much longer if they cannot replenish their numbers or hold their lands.

The Unicorn Clan escaped the Clan War with relatively few casualties. Kyoshi I, seeing the Unicorn's strength, grants a large number of Unicorn magistrates Emerald Magistrate status to restore peace through the Empire. Otaku Kamoko is mourned publicly as a hero to the clan and a shrine is created to honor her.

The Crane Clan, led by Hoturi's brother Kuwanan is suffering deeply in the wake of the Clan War. With Kyuden Doji and most of their major holdings razed and looted, they can no longer exert the economic power they once held over the Empire. Additionally the ascention of Kyoshi I leaves them in an usure position in the courts, with much of their political power gone. Ironically, their Military is quite respectable, containing some of the most resourceful and experienced soldiers in the Empire. Kuwanan has appointed Daidoji Uji to protect the Crane Borders until he can rebuild their influence in the Emperor's Court as well as their major holdings at home.

The Dragon Clan's order of tattooed monks unexpectedly recognizes Mirumoto Kaze as the new Clan Champion and under his rule the clan is becoming even more reclusive than before, with dragon seldom leaving their mountain homes.

Even better when read straight through. Good read though, I am satisfied with these events.

1129. Otosan Uchi is almost completely rebuilt. It is amazing what several teams of thousands of workmen are capable of when driven by their devotion to their new Emperor. Celebrations at the completion of the work continue through spring and into early summer, with competitions of all sorts being held in the capitol. From duels to poetry competitions, samurai from all over Rokugan begin to relearn the intricate dance of diplomacy, subtle steps in ink and steel.

The Age of Man is off to a strong start.

The Crab have also been rebuilding. Hida Dokun has spent the previous two years repairing the Kaiu Wall and it now stands whole once more. With the help of the Naga, Dokun and the Crab were able to wage a daring assault on the former Hiruma lands and take back Hiruma castle, which is in the process of being rebuilt. With the help of the Oracle of Fire, Kuni shugenja have developed and are performing new rituals that leave the castle and it's surroundings free of the Taint that had overtaken it, with plans to expand the rituals to reclaim all of the ancestral Hiruma holdings. Additionally, in the neighboring Falcon lands a maho-tsukai unleashed a powerful spirit. With aid from Dokun and the Crab, the Falcon are able to survive, but are no longer strong enough to protect their lands without aid. They swear fealty to the Crab and become the Toritaka family, with the blessing of Emperor Kyoshi.

The Scorpion, currently led by Bayushi Kumo have become more and more reclusive, as if their previous attempts to learn more about the Dragon were specifically to achieve this purpose. There are dark whispers that the Scorpion are cursed, plotting to overthrow Kyoshi, filled with warring factions attempting to gain power, and other such wild tales, though certainly not within earshot of any Scorpions. Suspicion has always fallen on the Emperor's left hand, but more and more the other clans are listening for some indication of what will come, even as rumors of Ninja attacks and assassinations rise.

The Lion continue to rebuild with renewed faith in their Emperor. An end to their endless wars seems to have come. Even their conflicts with the Crane have been reduced to a brooding simmer. Ikoma Tsunari has worked to update the Imperial Histories and has spent many days recording the exploits of our Splendid Emperor.

Yoritomo and the Mantis continue to struggle to prove their worth as a Great Clan. After all, even in times of peace trade must flow, and Yoritomo has a monopoly on a great many products from the Island of Silk and Spice. Although he is looked down upon by many, he holds his head high.

The Phoenix continue to be in dire straits. Barely able to hold their lands, a new Elemental Council has been elected, with the familiar Shiba Akane as the new Master of Fire, but the other council members are young and untested, and some doubt that they can match the strength and wisdom of their predecessors. In desperation the Phoenix have opened their clan to many who wish to join in an attempt to maintain their status as a Great Clan.

The Unicorn Clan's Emerald Magistrates work to secure peace throughout the empire although it is not always easy. Stopping Shadowlands tainted madmen is no longer part of the job description, but fighting hunger, peasant unrest, and bandits has proven quite a difficult job. Although those who know them understand the Unicorn are more than up to the challenge. Having just proven to the rest of Rokugan that they belong, they do not wish to give reason for the other Great Clans to think otherwise.

The Crane Clan led by Kuwanan continues to waver between strength and weakness, gaining political advantage in Otosan Uchi only to lose it as they stumble their way through a new political climate dictated by the Splendid Emperor. They look forward to the upcoming Winter Court as an opportunity to re-establish themselves as political power-brokers. Although with a meager harvest this year, it will be a hungry winter for many in the lands of the Crane.

The Dragon Clan's under Mirumoto Kaze has become a dark place, with many members of other clans hearing the call of "The Lord" and departing for the mountains of the Dragon to receive mystic tattoos and take the Kaze name. It is whispered that Kaze is slowly descending into madness, recruiting the fallen Tamashi, Kokujin, as his chief advisor. Kokujin, who takes the Kaze name, has advised that Kaze cannot find balance unless he can guarantee the loyalty of all who follow him. He demands that all Togashi abandon the name and swear fealty to the order of Kaze. Those who refuse to do so are exiled from the Dragon Clan. In a surprise move, Kaze unleashes his tatooed monks on those Togashi unwilling or unable to leave or take the Kaze name, butchering them where they are found in their home monastery and elsewhere. Among those slain is Kaze's own grandfather.

At the edges of the empire, fear is growing. Rumors of shadows glimpsed by lantern-light, strange disappearances, and friends turned to faceless terrors grow. Such reports are scoffed at by the authorities, who look to them as ghost stories. However as sightings and disappearances stack up, they must wonder if there is a grain of truth to these stories.

As a gesture of unity, Emperor Touturi holds Winter Court in Otosan Uchi so that all clans may meet as equals. A tthe end of this court, he intends to hold a second coronation, now that all of the clans have recovered somewhat from the horrors of the Clan War, so that all servants of the Empire can reaffirm their loyalty to the throne.

As summer turns to fall, those who know the truth struggle to protect themselves and the ones they care about from the predators lurking just beneath the surface. Some lie without, and others within...
