So since I'm the only one with the book, I realize that some of the more esoteric mechanics don't get used nearly as often as they could be due to player ignorance. Hopefully by posting here I'll be able to give you guys a leg up and a reference for some mechanics we haven't seen in game or you haven't read about. Keep in mind that in 4E things may change but these will be for 3E.

First up:

Tests of Honor and Honor Rolls:

The names are confusing. They sound like the same thing. Luckily they are identical with one small difference: an Honor Roll can be used once per gaming session to re-roll ANY failed roll using your honor in place of Either your Skill, Trait, or Ring. Normal rolling and Keeping rules then apply. If you fail you lose an entire rank (10 boxes) of honor.

An Example Honor Roll.

Shinjo Mary is fighting an Oni. It's TN to be hit is 35 and she's rolling 8k3 for her attacks(Agility 3, Yarijutsu 5). It's almost dead and needs only one more hit to kill it.

Shinjo Mary rolls and gets 21. She would miss and the Oni would get another chance to hit her.

Shinjo Mary decides to make an Honor Roll. She substitutes her honor (5) for her Agility (3) and re-rolls with 10k5. She gets 39, enough to hit the oni and kill it.

Had she failed her re-roll she would have lost 1 rank of honor and still missed.

She may not call for another Honor Roll for the remainder of the game session. However, if there is a situation that would cause direct honor loss she may perform Tests of Honor as usual.

A Test of Honor is the same as an Honor Roll, but you may make it any time that failing a roll would directly result in Honor Loss. Again, if you fail you lose an entire rank (10 boxes) of Honor.

An Example Test of Honor:

Akodo Bob is talking to Shosuro Linda

Shosuro Linda wants Akodo Bob to tell her about a friend's secrets. She rolls Deceit (Seduction) + Awareness. She has the Deceit (Seduction) emphasis, her Awareness is 4, and her Deceit Skill is also four, so her roll is 8k4+4.

Akodo Bob can oppose this with Investigation (Interrogation)+Awareness to see what her true motives are. He does not have the Interrogation Emphasis, his Investigation Skill is 2 and his Awareness is 3 so he is rolling 5k3.

Shosuro Linda rolls 33.

Akodo Bob rolls 24.

Akodo Bob's Honor Rank is 5, and this counts as being duped into performing a Disloyal Act, so he would lose 7 boxes of honor directly because of failing this roll.

Akodo Bob may call for a Test of Honor. He must substitute his Honor rank for either his Investigation or Awareness. Since his investigation is 2 and his Awareness is 3, he chooses Awareness so he can keep more dice.

Akodo Bob re-rolls with 7k5 and gets 56. He passes the test and on the strength of his honor resists the scorpions seduction attempt.

If he had failed he would lose an entire rank of honor.

So for the test of honor example, he is basically wagering 3 more boxes of honor to pass the test. Unless he losses the 10 + the 7 original boxes, then that is almost 2 whole ranks. Is the test of honor also a once a session go, or is it availible any time you would lose honor?

No, he's not "wagering" anything. He will lose 1 rank of honor plus the original 7 honor loss if he fails the roll. It costs nothing to make the roll.

Any time you would lose honor.
