This was the main craft:

http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/777182013032234962/B7639585F85317D0F0011F4B43F765F0EE8471B9/

Two stages of heavy liquid-fuel launch rockets to get me out into sun orbit, a middle stage of high-efficiency nuclear engines, and four of the more basic fuel tanks/engines for landing and takeoff (Gilly has the lowest gravity of everything I've landed on...something like a five second burn gets you from the surface back to Eve orbit). The final stage is the cluster of xenon tanks and radioisotope generators on the bottom of the central section, powering an ion impulse engine. It will run at full throttle for probably 1.5 hours, but it's not very powerful.

I had actually neglected to put parachutes on it, only realizing my mistake after I had already landed on Gilly and taken off again. That necessitated this craft, Orbital Rescue Bot 3:

http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/777182013032236123/561491E258732B133169E1B83C51DF970E4DC979/

The grayed out rocket stack attaches to the four radial decouplers around the outside. The front end is a shielded docking clamp, and the section with the parachutes and the probe core detaches with it. I had to steer the landing probe into a flat, even orbit over Kerbin, and then maneuver ORB3 into nose-to-nose contact and let it clamp on. On the way into the atmosphere, I dumped the rocket section and used the parachutes to get the lander to the surface safely.

Moral: Don't forget the damned parachutes.

You should see if NASA or SPACE-X are hiring.

Looks like someone already cooked up a mod to fix the glaring issue with career mode.

And this is fantastic:

Those are some seriously gorgeous space station designs.

File this one under "stuff that should be built into the base game."

Also, F12 seems to turn on some kind of aero overlay now, as well as taking screenshots in Steam. Mad

Is it sad that I watched Apollo 13 today and recognized a lot of the instruments solely from Kerbal?

I'd be kind of surprised if that weren't the case.
