I'd imagine a few of you have been following the situation in Ferguson -- if anyone isn't up to speed, here's a kind of quick summary of what's going on:

http://www.ksdk.com/story/news/crime/2014/08/09/police-shooting-ferguson/13832083/

Basically, a police officer shot and killed an unarmed teenager. From what I've read, there are two accounts of what happened:

Quote:
St. Louis County Police Chief Jon Belmar reported that a scuffle began when a Ferguson police officer encountered two men, Michael Brown and a friend, walking in the street.[1] Reports describe the event as starting after 2:00 p.m. with an initial scuffle within the police car where a shot was fired, and then the police officer shot Brown multiple times as he was fleeing.[5][6] According to police, Brown, who was unarmed, shoved and hit a police officer, and reached for the officer's handgun,[1] prompting him to shoot Brown.

Quote:
Dorian Johnson told WALB-TV that he and Brown were walking home from a convenience store when a police officer told them to get out of the street and onto the sidewalk.

Johnson said they kept walking, which caused the officer to confront them from his car and again after getting out of his car.

Johnson said the officer fired, and he and Brown were scared and ran away.

'He shot again, and once my friend felt that shot, he turned around and put his hands in the air, and he started to get down', Johnson said. 'But the officer still approached with his weapon drawn and fired several more shots.'

It's useful to note that Brown was 35 feet away from the police cruiser when he died, and witnesses report hearing at least five shots.

In the time since, the town has seen significant friction between protesters and police:

And it's getting worse:

^Seriously, watch the video. They fire tear gas into an angry, but otherwise nonviolent, crowd of people, most/all of whom are not even in a public space.

Deplorable actions all around. It is indeed a tragedy no matter which of the account are actually true. Understandably people are upset, I would be too if it happened to someone I knew. To make matters worse, the police do not seem to have their act together at all from that last video on the post. It is also sad that riots and looting has commenced. I'm not sure that vandalizing and damaging local businesses that share nothing but a common location is a correct response though. Human nature as its best I suppose.

Later this hour, the ever-compassionate social club, Anonymous, pledges to lend a hand in the on-going protests.
